how to Repair tears

Step 1

Anna Watson

Assess the size of the tear: if it’s small, this method will work well but if it’s bigger of you want a more decorative mending option, try my patching tutorial instead.

Step 2

Anna Watson

Thread your needle using a contrasting thread or a more subtle matching colour and tie a knot a few centimetres from the end.

Step 3

Anna Watson

Pull the needle through the fabric just above the opening to secure the knot.

Step 4

Anna Watson

Go back through slightly further down, taking in a tiny bit of fabric either side of the tear.

Step 5

Anna Watson

Repeat step 4, moving slowly down the tear until you reach the end, then turn your piece around and go back up to the original knot, creating the same small stitches along the way.

Step 6

Anna Watson

Once you’re back at the knot, you should have a well sealed tear with no fraying ends poking through. If not, you can go back over it again.

Step 7

Anna Watson

Tie the two loose ends together two or three times to secure them.

Step 8

Anna Watson

Snip off any excess thread.

Step 9

You should now have a mended tear!
