how to patch tears

Step 1

Anna Watson

This method is great for larger tears, but works equally well on small ones or for personalising a garment.

Step 2

Anna Watson

Choose an embroidery or tapestry thread if you have one (if not, use a fine thread and make smaller stitches). Thread your needle and tie a knot a few centimetres from the end of the thread.

Step 3

Anna Watson

Find a scrap of a different fabric, the brighter the better! Pin it over the tear.

Step 4

Anna Watson

Push your needle through from about 1cm from the edge of the patch, bringing it back to the front just past the edge.

Step 5

Anna Watson

To create a blanket stitch, repeat the same stitch but bring the needle in front of the loop which is forming, catching it in.

Step 6

Anna Watson

Your stitches should look like this.

Step 7

Anna Watson

Repeat all the way around the patch until you arrive back at the original knot.

Step 8

Anna Watson

For the last stitch, bring the needle through your first loop.

Step 9

Anna Watson

Tie the two ends together in a double knot.

Step 10

Anna Watson

Trim off the excess thread.

Step 11

Anna Watson

You should have something like this!

Step 12

Anna Watson

The back might look messier, but that’s ok.
