how to Repair hems

Step 1

Anna Watson

If you have an unravelling hem which you want to fix, or even a full hem you’d like to take up, this is a great hand-sewing method.

Step 2

Anna Watson

Start with a fine needle and thread, and tie a knot a few centimetres from the end of the thread.

Step 3

Anna Watson

Insert the needle about 1cm before the start of the open area and bring it back through about 1cm further along.

Step 4

Anna Watson

For the next stitch, bring the needle back to where the knot is and make another stitch, ending just after the thread.

Step 5

Anna Watson

Repeat step four - starting each stitch where the previous one ends - until you’ve gone just beyond the unravelled section.

Step 6

Anna Watson

To secure the end, make a small stitch and bring the needle through the loop to create a knot.

Step 7

Anna Watson

Trim off any excess thread.

Step 8

This is what the final result should look like.
